Under 16 Hurling League Final
St Colum’s 2-12 St James’ 4-4
The under-16 hurlers of St James’ put in a commendable effort in their last match of the season – the league final against St Colum’s. The Kealkill lads had already put paid to the championship ambitions of St James’ en route to winning the county championship, and so the omens were not good. To make matters worse, St James’ travelled to the final in Skibereen with just eleven players, and therefore had no sub to call upon.

As expected, St Colum’s quickly piled on the pressure and the scores, and came off at half time with a commanding lead of fourteen points (2-10 to 0-2). The second half saw a radical improvement in the play of St James’, with the team scoring four goals and two points, and by the time it was over, Colum’s were no doubt relieved to have held on for victory.

Goal scorers for St James’ were Jack Oates, Kevin Horan, James Taylor and Peter Walsh, with Horan also pointing three times, and Aaron Hayes the scorer of a point. A mere two points separated the teams at full time, and, though dejected, St James’ left the field with heads held high. This was a fine performance from a team where every player involved has still a year to play at under-16.
