Junior A Hurling Championship
St James' 2-15 St Colum's 0-15

St James' have advanced to the semi-finals of the Junior A Hurling Championship after dispatching St Colum's in Sunday's quarter final.

St James' got off to a good start, going three points up within three minutes, but St Colum's were able to keep pace with St James' through a succession of frees. The first half ended level, at 10 points each. Tellingly, St Colum's had scored only two points from play, a credit to the St James' defence.

Halfway into the second half, with St Colum's having gone three points ahead, St James' lost Kevin O'Brien, who was sent off for a second yellow card. St Colum's quickly squandered their advantage by pulling Kieran O'Donovan to the ground in the penalty area, and James O'Driscoll dispatched the penalty with precision, levelling the game. St James' seemed to sense that the game was now theirs for the taking, and confirmation came with another goal within two minutes, when Kieran O'Donovan snatched a free from the air, turned and fired into the net. St James' three-point lead was stretched to four by another well-placed free by James O'Driscoll (who scored 1-7 in all). St Colum's replied with a converted free (their tenth place-ball score of the game), but Aaron Hayes quickly cancelled it out with a well-taken point. With time marching on, St Colum's went in search of a goal, but were denied by good defending and a couple of Diarmuid O'Donovan saves. Two more converted frees by James O'Driscoll sealed the six-point win for St James', who will meet Kilbree in the semi-final.
