St James’ opened their junior-A hurling-league campaign with a hard-earned victory over St Mary’s in Enniskeane last Sunday. On a very heavy sod and with a strong wind, it was not pretty and every score was hard fought for. In the first half, St James’ – against the wind – were always in touch, and a goal on the stroke of half-time by Kieran O’Donovan ensured they ended the half within two points of St Mary’s (0-9 to 1-4). The second half was a tight affair and scores were tied with ten minutes remaining. However, St James’ put in a strong finish to win the game 1-13 to 0-11. Next weekend is football league versus Clann na nGael in Ardfield. Team: Diarmuid O’Donovan, Eoin Deasy, Finbarr McCarthy, Donnacha McCarthy, Seamus McCarthy, Micheál McCarthy, David Hayes, Paul O’Sullivan (0-1), Ian Evans, Kevin O’Brien (0-1), Kevin O’Leary, Kieran O’Donovan (1-3), Mark Evans 0-2, Brian O’Donovan, James O’Driscoll (0-6). Subs: Mark O’Brien, Thomas Nyhan, Damian Dooley, Seán O’Connor.
